The Christian Social Council (CMR) Valhalla focuses on casework, where we render intensive services in order to secure the home environment to prevent children from being removed from their parents and be placed in alternative care. We offer services to children that have been abused, neglected and sexually molested.

Most of our cases are referred to us by the local schools and are often teenagers in need of our services. There has been a significant increase in custody cases, where one parent tends to blame the other and assert that the other parent is not equipped to raise the child. We have also seen a surge in alcohol and drug abuse along with family violence in recent years.

Our office renders an intensive prevention program where we refer families to resources in our community where they can receive therapy (eg. Kerk Sonder Mure). Our intervention results in fewer children being removed from their parents’ care by the Children’s Court. As a result of the focus on prevention services, we succeed in keeping families together.

CMR Valhalla also renders services to 55 foster families with 62 foster children. These children receive therapy to help them deal with the trauma they have experienced. We offer foster parents the opportunity to attend an ongoing support group to help them deal more effectively with the specific emotional needs of the foster children in their care. Family re-unification services are also rendered where applicable. These parents are also referred for assessment, therapy and parental guidance as needed.

This office has a very strong support network and we are privileged to have a wonderful working relationship with the different schools and churches in our area. Our social worker visits the schools on a weekly basis to assess the needs of the pupils. The children that form part of our caseload are visited at their schools, where we also hold network meetings with the parents. The schools constantly refer children in need of care to the social workers. The good working relationship between the CMR and the local schools ensure we provide a quality service to these children and their families.

In spite of the economic challenges NGOs like the CMR face, we have been blessed by strong support from the local community to render services in Centurion West since 1990. We are extremely grateful to every single one of our contributors and the many friends of CMR Valhalla for their support. Without their continuous support we would not be able to impact the community and improve the lives of children the way we strive for every day.
