Peter* and Anna* – a story of sickness and pain that turned into happiness and achievement
Peter and his younger sister had both been infected with the same virus and were being treated for the condition. They received their monthly medication from the local hospital.
The social worker arranged a place of residence for the children at a relative. There were family politics amongst the family members.
A month later the social worker was contacted by a relative informing her that Peter had run away from home and was residing with a community member. After long discussions with the family, Peter, and the caregivers it was decided that it would be in the best interest for Peter to reside with the caregivers.
During the discussions, the social worker observed that Peter seemed to be angry and unhappy, and it was discovered that he did not not take his medication on a regular basis, while his academic performance was also below average. The social worker then arranged a for a psychological assessment. The psychologist recommended that Peter engage into therapy as he had unresolved issues.
The social worker also arranged for the caregiver and Peter to consult with a nurse at the local hospital who assisted patients and families who suffer from the HIV/AIDS condition. The purpose was for Peter to understand the consequences if the medication is not taken and the positive lifestyle he could live if he continued to use the medication.
After the completion of the therapy sessions with the psychologist and having a better understanding of the disease, Peter started taking his medication regularly and became a happier child- smiling, improving his academic studies, accepting instructions, and following tasks through.
He adapted well with his caregivers and continues to reside with them. The social worker continues to monitor and supervise the family and will provide the necessary services in future.
